Pancake and waffle mixes recalled due to potential salmonella contamination

Stonewall Kitchen is voluntarily recalling limited quantities of flavored pancake and waffle products due to a risk of salmonella contamination, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Dec. 16. The mixes were made with recalled powdered milk ingredients from a secondary supplier.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this product withdrawal to all its stores, said Richard Stith, lead consumer safety officer for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

The following products are affected by this recall:

  • Stonewall Kitchen Cinnamon Apple Pancake & Waffle Mix, 16 ounces – UPC: 711381025659 with "enjoy by" dates of Feb. 15 and Feb. 16, 2018
  • Stonewall Kitchen Orange Cranberry Pancake & Waffle Mix, 16 ounces – UPC: 711381325971 with an "enjoy by" date of Feb. 9, 2018
  • Stonewall Kitchen Toasted Coconut Pancake & Waffle Mix, 16 ounces – UPC: 711381033494 with an "enjoy by" date of Nov. 30, 2017

There have been no illnesses reported to date and no pathogenic bacteria have been found in the listed products.

Salmonella can be potentially life-threatening, especially to infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. It can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella's most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms usually develop between eight to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food and last about four to seven days.

Customers who purchased any of these products at the commissary should bring them back for a full refund.
